EMBA Programs
Introduction
The Department of Management Information Systems (MIS) — the latest edition to the Faculty of Business Studies— is offering MBA programs in two separate modes: a full-time day program, and an evening program. Details of the MBA (Evening) Program are presented in this section of the prospectus. A separate prospectus is available for the MBA (day) program.
Background of MBA(Evening) Program
Considering the need to prepare talented, skilled and qualified managers for the various business houses and non profit organizations of the country, the Academic Council of the University of Dhaka in its meeting on the 2nd May, 1999, accepted the proposal (Vide Resolution # 102) for starting an “MBA (Evening) Program” by the Faculty of Business Studies.
The Rules and Regulation
The Academic Council has decided that the MBA (Evening) Program will be of 66 credit hours. The council has agreed that the program will run on a self-financing basis and also asked the Sub-Committee of the Faculty of Business Studies to suggest the Rules of the Program and also develop the fee structure. As suggested by the Council, the Faculty Sub-Committee after taking opinions and suggestions of the departmental academic committees of the then four departments of the Faculty in a meeting on the 28th September 2000 has developed the following rules and regulations for administering the program. i. Title of the Program and That of the Degree:
This program will be known as “MBA (Evening)” program and the students after completing all the requirements of the program will get a Master of Business Administration (MBA) Degree.
ii. Degree Requirements:
The MBA (Evening) program will be 66- credit hour program including a project paper. Every student must write a project paper weighting 6 semester credit hours, which shall be graded.
iii) Admission Requirements:
Graduates in any discipline may apply for appearing at the admission test to be conducted by the Faculty thrice a year. Work experience of a candidate will be preferred. The Dean of the Faculty in consultation with the Chairmen will determine admission criteria.
iv) Seat Capacity:
The department of MIS may admit 60 students, v) Course Structure:
It will be the responsibilities of the Departmental Academic Committees to design courses and get them approved by the Faculty and Academic Council. The Prerequisite courses will be designed by the department and offered in such a way that the students will not face any problem in taking specialized and functional courses in subsequent semesters.
vi) Duration of the Program:
A student must complete the degree within 5 years and one must take at least 2 courses in a semester in normal cases. However, in special circumstances maximum period for completion of the program may be extended up to 8 years.
vii) Academic Year & Semesters:
English calendar year will be the academic year for this program and this year will be divided into three semesters as stated below.
Spring Semester January to April 4.0 Months
Summer Semester May to August 4.0
Fall Semester September to December 4.0
For each course there is one class of 3 hours duration in a week. This means that there will be 15 classes including class tests, Mid term examinations, final examination and presentations in a semester for one course.
An academic calendar is designed by the MBA (evening) committee of the department at the begining to each semester that clearly spells out starting date of the semester, 1 st & 2nd, Mid term examination weeks, Term paper presentation week, class break and final examination schedule.
viii) Grading System:
Course teachers will be responsible for developing course outlines, setting questions and marking scripts and grading students. Course teachers are required to submit final letter grades and supporting papers including break-up of 100% marks, examination scripts, attendance sheets etc. to the Director of the program. The university has adopted the uniform grading system with effect from the 3rd batch as explained below:

9. Evaluation of the Students:
Students’ performance in a course is evaluated using a range of measures as stated below:
Mid –term test (Two) 20%

x) Waver and Make-up:
Students may apply for waiver (prerequisites and electives) and may entitled up to a maximum exemption of 24 credit hour. A student can apply for waiver if he/she has atleast B-grade in a course that he/she has completed in a under graduate or post-graduate course from a recognized university of institution. However, the MBA (Evening) program committee reserves the right of granting waiver.

xi) Award of Degree
The University of Dhaka awards Degrees on the recommendation of the Departmental Academic Committee. Students completing the required courses with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 are eligible for a degree. But, none will get a degree with an “F” grade in any course.
xi) Administration
The Department of MIS has a 5 member MBA (Evening) Committee including the Director, the Chairman and other 3 members. The department Academic Committee forms this committee for a term of two years. The Director is the chief executive officer of the program and will convene and chair all the meetings of the committee and will be responsible for overall supervision of the program. In his absence, the next senior member will perform the function of the Director.
The EMBA Committee is responsible for the following:
(a) Overall coordination of the program
(b)Assignment of duties and responsibilities to each member of the committee
( c) Conduct of examinations
(d)Compilation and submission of results for publication
(e)Checking course outline
(f)Administration of the evaluation of forms for teachers as designed by the department
(g) Any other task assigned by the departmental academic committee
(h) Preparation of budget and maintenance of accounts
(i) Making arrangement for the audit of accounts
(j) Submission of periodical reports to the departmental academic committee
(k) Decisions relating to waiver and make-up courses
(1) Selection of courses to be offered in each semester.
The Department Academic Committee would be responsible for:
a) Admission of the students
b) Allocation of the course to be offered in each semester
c) Ensuring logistic support
d) Appointment of teachers for conducting courses
e) Recommendation for awarding degree
f) Designing and approving of Teachers’ evaluation Form
xii) Retake (R) of a Course
A student earning F grade in a course shall be required to improve the grade tn retaking the course on payment of requisite fees offered in the subsequent available semester- A student earning a grade of A- or worse may also elect to improve the grade by retaking the course when available in the next semester on payment of retaking course fees. However, a candidate cannot retake any course after graduation. In this case the concerned student shall have apply to withhold his/her graduation to the EMBA Committee.
In the above situations, the transcripts will show credit, grade and R (Retake) against the retaking course. Students will be allowed to retake a course only once. In order to retake a Course, the student must apply to the EMBA Committee at least 4 weeks before the commencement of the semester. Any application for retaking a course will automatically lead to cancellation of his/her earlier grade.

Internship: Apart from course work students are required to do internship after completing their required courses. The internship is done under the guidance of a supervisor for a period of three months. The internship is of 3 credits. The students must follow the following specific guidelines/information for internship:
1. Internship/Project for three months in private business organizations, government offices, public sector corporations or banks or financial institution is an integral part of MBA (Evening) program.
2. The objective of the Program is to acquaint the student with the organization and its work situation.
3. Each student is required to undergo the internship program and prepare a report according to a format specified by the supervisor.
4. The date of selection of Supervisors by the MBA (Evening) Program committee is the starting date of Internship.
5. Students have to submit their Internship Reports within 90 days.
6. Minimum sitting time with the Supervisor is at least 5 times 1st sitting – with project proposal, 2nd sitting-after developing questionnaire. 3rd sitting – progress of data collection, 4th sitting – with draft Report, 5th sitting – with Final Report.
7. This Internship report is graded/marked by the supervisor out of 100 marks for 1st Batch and out of 50 marks for 2nd and onward Batches.
8. The student has to defend his/her thesis in front of the MBA (Evening) program Committee where his/her defense will be marked by the committee out of 100 marks for 1st batch and out of 50 marks for 2nd and onward batches.
