EMBA Program

4.1 Introduction

The Department of Management Studies is offering MBA programs in two separate modes: a full-time day program, and an evening program. Details of the evening program (EMBA) are presented below in this section of the prospectus. A separate prospectus is available for the Regular MBA program.

4.2 Background of EMBA

Considering the need to prepare talented, skilled and qualified managers for the various business houses and non profit organizations of the country, the Academic Council of the University of Dhaka, in its meeting on the 2nd May, 1999, accepted the proposal (Vide Resolution # 102) for starting an “MBA Evening Program” by the Faculty of Business Studies. The Academic Council has decided that the Evening MBA Program will be of 60 credit hours (plus 06 credit hours for project paper) and will run on a self-financing basis. A set of rules and regulations have been formulated at different times for administering the program.

4.3 Rules and Regulations

1. Title of the Program and That of the Degree

This program is known as “Evening MBA” program and the students after completing all the requirements of the program will get a Master of Business Administration (MBA) Degree.

2. Degree Requirements

The Evening MBA program is a 66-credit hour program including a project paper of 03 credit hours. Every student must, write a project paper weighting 3 semester credit hours, which shall be graded.

3. Admission Requirements

Graduates in any discipline may apply for appearing at the admission test to be conducted by the Faculty of Business Studies twice a year. Work experience of a candidate is preferred. Admission criteria are determined by the Dean of the Faculty in consultation with the Chairmen of the departments under the Faculty.

4. Seat Capacity

The department admits 60 students in one batch.

5. Course Structure

It is the responsibility of the Departmental Academic Committee to design courses and get them approved by the Faculty and Academic Council. The prerequisite courses are designed by the department and offered in such a way that the students do not face any problem in taking specialized and functional courses in subsequent semesters.

6. Duration of the Program

A student must complete the program within 5 years and one must take at least 2 courses in a semester in normal cases. However, in special circumstances, maximum period for completion of the program may be extended up to 8 years.

7. Academic Year and Semesters

The Gregorian calendar year is the academic year for this program, and this year is divided into three semesters as stated below:

There is one class of 3.00 hours for each course in a week (in total 15 classes in a semester including class tests and presentations).

An Academic Calendar is designed by the Departmental Academic Committee at the beginning of every semester, and every effort is made to complete the courses within the time-period specified in the calendar.

8. Grading System

Course teachers are responsible for developing course outlines, setting questions and marking scripts and grading students. They are required to submit final letter grades, along with the scripts, to the Departmental Evening MBA Program Director. Two grading systems are applicable to evaluate the overall performance of the students. The new grading system applies to the students of 10th and subsequent batches, which is as follows:

9. Evaluation :

Students’ performance in a course is evaluated as stated below:

10. Course Waiver and Make-up

On application, a student may be granted course exemption/waiver as specified below:

The courses for which application will be made for exemption must be similar or equivalent to the courses offered by the Department in its Evening MBA Program.

11. Award of the MBA Degree

The University of Dhaka awards the MBA Degree to the successful students on the recommendation of the Departmental Academic Committee. Students completing the required courses with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 are eligible for a degree. But, none will get a degree with an “F” grade in any course.

12. Administration

In the Department of Management Studies, there is a 5-member Evening MBA Program Committee, formed by the Departmental Academic Committee for a term fo two years, including the Chairman of the Department and the Evening MBA Director. This committee is responsible for supervision of the program. The present Evening MBA Program Committee (January 2008-December 2009) consists of the following:

The Committee specifically looks after the following:

(a)    Overall coordination of the program

(b)   Assignment of duties and responsibilities to each member of the committee

(c)    Selection of courses to be offered in each semester.

(d)   Assigning courses to the teachers

(e)    Conduct of examinations

(f)    Compilation and submission of results for publications

(g)   Checking course outlines

(h) Administration of the Teaching Evaluation Forms (TEF) for each course teacher

(i)    Preparation of budget and maintaining of accounts

(j)    Making arrangement for the audit of accounts

(k) Submission of periodical reports to the Departmental Academic Committee

(1)    Decisions relating to waiver and make-up courses.

(m) Any other tasks assigned by the Departmental Academic Committee.

(n) The Director is the chief executive officer of the program and will chair all the meetings of the EMBA program. In his absence, the next senior member will perform the functions of the Director.

The Department Academic Committee remains responsible for:

a)   Admission of the students

b)  Allocation of the courses to be offered in each semester

c)   Ensuring logistic support

d)  Assignment of teachers for the courses offered in each semester

e)   Recommendation for awarding degree.

13. Retake of a Course

A student earning F grade in a course shall be required to improve the grade by retaking the course on payment of requisite fees offered in a subsequent semester. A student earning a grade of A-or less may also elect to improve the grade by retaking the course when available in a subsequent semester on payment of requisite course fees. However, a student cannot retake any course after graduation. In this case the concerned student shall have to apply to withhold his/her graduation to the EMBA Program Committee.

In the above situations, the transcripts will show credit, grade and R (Retake) against the retaking course. Students will be allowed to retake a course only once. In order to retake a Course, the student must apply to the EMBA Committee at least 4 weeks before the commencement of the semester. Any application for retaking a course will automatically lead to cancellation of his/her earlier grade.

14. Withdrawal

Withdrawal from the program for a definite period of time may be considered if permission is sought from the EMBA Program Committee keeping his/her earlier semester grades in tact.

15. Fee Structure

As the University has decided to offer this course on a self-financed basis, the entire cost of administering the program shall be borne by students. As agreed by the University, the following fees are charged for the Evening MBA Program:

Registration fees                                      :    Tk. 10,000.00 once

Semester fees                                          :    Tk. 3,000.00 for each semester

Course fees                                             :    Tk. 2,500.00 per credit hour
